Saturday 28th March 2009 - 36 Holes
Well that was a battle. I have never played in such strong winds like that, I have been to Brancaster Bay- Royal West Norfolk and that is always a challenge in the wind but this was far worse that that.
Today was my first event of the season, it was played at Formby Ladies Golf Club. A fantastic golf course surrounded by Formby Golf Club (The Men’s Course). The ladies have their own clubhouse as well as their own golf course… not bad hey!!
Its 5374 yards long but with today’s wind felt more like 6000!! The temperatures never reached double figures all day leaving me with another factor to contend with. Its a short course, however very well designed with a few short holes and small tricky greens makes it a good test of golf.
I have never played it before today and hit of the first with just my course planner to help me guide the way round. Not that the course planner was much good, on the first hole it showed me to look for TWO silver birch trees on the left and there was only one!! Wouldn’t surprise me if it had got blown away with the wind!!
I was very pleased with how I played in both rounds, unfortunately my plan of having a practice hadn’t worked out due to my travel arrangements changing. This would have been a great help as I played TOO safe on a few holes where I could have taken more length of the hole with hitting my driver of the tee. Something which I remembered to do in the afternoon.
My first round I scored 82 with a disaster 7 on the 17th. I found the heather of the tee and struggled to get out, it had been my first poor tee shot of the day it cost me three shots!!
I was disappointed with my first round however the scoreboard was full of high scores proving that everyone was finding it tough.
I was determined to card a better score in the afternoon. It had been a rush all day due to us not teeing of until 3pm for the second round there was concerns we wouldn’t make it round in the light. I had to eat my sandwich as we played the first, it eventually started to digest by the 13th!!
I reached the turn on the second round three over par after 3 putting the 8th a 428 yard Par 5 playing into the wind, I ripped my 4 wood approach into the green on for two. Should have been a shot back in the bag!!!
I had to wait 33 holes for my first birdie of the day I managed to roll it in on the Par 3 16th. I signed for a 76 in the afternoon putting me tied 12th in a field of 54 players with handicaps no worse than 3.
A steady start to the season.
